Background

Donatien's place in his mother's side of the family leaves him a lot of room to go his own way because he's nowhere near anything important. So when she, a favored but still very young daughter of his house's Matron Mother had a dalliance with someone outside the church (and whose only child was born and wasn't even a daughter), his prospects for being useful to the line were already dwindling and petered into nothing when he showed no interest in women or having children. A bard is low on the ring of needed warriors, so some years ago, he left the Underdark and has been pursuing his personal passions ever since. So long as he doesn't embarrass the family name (hard to do, he uses a stage name) they're content to let him be and occasionally send support when he can be reached. And for quite some time, he was.

...And then the Nautiloid happened. On his way to a performance, even. Rude, if you ask him.

Personality

If Donatien knows anything, he knows his work, and he is a performer. Dance, singing or spoken oration, the violin -- he is something of a perfectionist in these regards but it also means he knows masks and when someone is giving him BS. He knows another Bard when he sees one (and that includes you, Raphael -- you sang your own battle music; you are not fooling anybody). He gets people and at least a portion of his travels have centered on just learning the nuances of different races, classes, creeds.

He can come off a little vain and fastidious. This has limits; there is only so much maintenance you can do in the wilds, but he does what he can. And trust a Bard to be the one who stalks into a battle in heels. He is not one to be trifled with when he has either a rapier or bow in hand, but he will also do his best to be distracting in the heat of battle; it's hard to land a blow when the icy bitch in the back keeps telling you that if they were a woman they'd screw your father and give him a son he actually loves.

Underneath the typical (if a bit high maintenance) Bard facade, Donatien is generally a pretty morally sound character. He will talk his way out of a problem before resorting to violence, but he's going big whatever way the pendulum swings. He doesn't make targets out of the helpless and undeserving, and he will go for "no casualties" options first. There is always a middle ground and the only things likely to stop him looking for it are 1) imminent danger and the certainty the other side won't (or shouldn't) be talked to and sadly 2) the powerful need to win an argument. He does not like being told what to do, and if he sees an angle he does not agree with, he is going to push. It does mean that if there is a perspective that someone is just not considering, he is likely to present it and make certain he is heard. But conversely, it also means he can be tempted to say the hardest thing he can just to win, even if it's underhanded and out of pocket.

Something he takes to heart a lot is the idea of leadership. He doesn't fancy himself as the leader of the party but will take the role when needed, and he gives that to someone else with the caveat that breaking his trust is not something lightly done. It comes with responsibility. If you have that kind of influence on people, you should be wise with that power or expect to face consequences. Sometimes that consequence is simply that your loyal stop being loyal and leave you. Sometimes it means your head encountering an untimely separation from the rest of your body. He says it's a family thing and has not elaborated, but bad leaders need to be taken care of, and if no one else will do it and you're free? Get on it. A number of figures' days would have been numbered even without the Absolute mess going on.

That's not to say that the guy is a full-on activist. But if you want him involved, making the right case goes a long way. So does showing your ass when he's there to witness it.

IC/OOC Prefs

(To be expanded) Shipping, canonmates (including other tavs) and cross canon welcome! I am up for memes, PSLs, games, whatever. Just shoot me a PM.

PM inbox is open.
Discord is impuretale
Plurk is ImpureTale

BACKTAGGING: Always welcome!
THREADHOPPING: Ask first.
FOURTHWALLING: Ask first. I know this is baked into some canons, so I am flexible!
ROMANCE/SHIPPING: 25+ only (or race equivalent -- some in D&D don't reach adulthood until 100+ years), so no kids by anyone's reckoning and nobody that looks like a kid. M/M only for shipping but always open to gen/friendships with anyone.
SMUT: I am down but very out of practice, so please be patient with me. Always PM if you want to pitch specific ideas at me; in most cases I'm probably down but I might not have any experience with a set scenario, so.
MINDREADING: Yes but let me know it's coming, and beyond that always PM before anything headed in the direction of mind control.
FIGHTING/INJURY/DEATH: Ask me first; I am terrible at writing action but I have no problem if I know ahead of time if we are writing scenes dealing with the aftermath of any of the above. Let's collaborate.

In-Game Choices and Headcanons

Game Choices and Headcanons
-Sided with the Grove, (knocked out Minthara instead of killing her), investigated Khaga and resolved Shadow Druid conspiracy without killing her.
-Chose the Underdark route, went to the Githyanki creche first.
-Killed Orin before Gortash (JUSTICE FOR GRUB), saved kidnappee.
-Saved all captives in the Iron Throne, including Omeluum.
-Was friendly with the Emperor, but ultimately erred on the side of releasing Orpheus. Forever salty the Emperor did not let me convince him I was right.
-Non-ascended Astarion leads the spawn in the Underdark, Gale is a University professor, Shadowheart is a Selunite and continues to adventure, Lae'zel returned to help her people and has come a long way as a diplomat (and laughs at how she used to pronounce Faerun), Good terms with both Jaheira and Minsc (both alive, Minsc is being the Guild's 'conscience'), Karlach returned to Avernus with Wyll (as the Blade of Avernus) to hunt demons while a cure is being sought out for her.
-Adopted Myshka. The cat called me Mama, this was non-negotiable.

Donatien T'avin Ardul
Baldur's Gate 3
Age: 118
Birthday: 30 Hammer
Gender: Male
Race: Drow (Seldarin)
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 152 lbs
Appearance: Tall for a Drow but short among most species of elf, he is often wearing heels, so it is not often clocked right away. Donatien has the body of a born performer and acrobat and is just barely entering adulthood for one of his kind. He sports the signature dark ash skin tone and silken, stark white hair that has a touch of wave to it, but only where it's shorter and framing his face. The weight and thickness of it running down just half past his back makes it appear mostly straight, but he will braid and bind it up when he has less savory work than Bardly pursuits to deal with. His eyes are not the Lolth-sworn red of his mother but a deep cobalt-purple, but his pupils carry a ghostly inner light, especially when in the dark, reflecting like a cat's. A trait he inherited from his (Seldarin) father.
Sexuality: Gay
Background: Noble -- he's pretty far down in the line of family succession, only really remembered as a technicality, his own mother the youngest of Matron Mother's daughters and the only one to bear just a single child (and no daughters) before she passed away, so that the fact that mom had a baby with someone outside the church can be overlooked and tolerated. He's been out of the Underdark and pursuing his own passions for a few years now.
